I've purchased dozens of cars over the years, and this was the worst experience for me as well. In fact, it was so bad that my wife said she never wants to get another Mazda even if it is the best car in the world. The first dealer I went to (the largest in the U.S.) agreed with the TrueCar price and then added on another $700 in extras (doc and etch fees) and said that was not negotiable. Other dealers in NJ had similar fees (who said cartels don't exist in the U.S.?) They couldn't get the color I want and said they would have to order it. I checked the web site, and the Reflex Blue was not available anywhere, so I gave them my $1000 for the order. Well, the Reflex Blue was available elsewhere (they lied), and since I just got in an accident, I needed the car right away. So I said that if they couldn't get the swap, just give me back my deposit and I would buy it elsewhere. They would not give me the deposit back, but said that I could use it as "store credit". Since I was going to get a number of accessories anyway, the the new dealer in CT convinced me to switch with a $500 discount from the original amount, I said OK and put down a deposit. Well, it turned out to be a bait and switch even though they gave me a VIN. They had no problem returning my deposit immediately and I found another one in MD. I negotiated a deal at almost $500 less than the CT deal. They said the car was at the port so I gave it two weeks to get to the dealer. I called the dealer the day before I was supposed to pick it up, and they said no problem. Well, I got there and there was no car. At this juncture, even though we ended up paying $1000 less than the original deal, my wife was ripped (and I don't blame her!!!) They finally got the car 2 hours later and it took an hour to prep and we were on the road. For our "trouble", they gave us an iPad mini.
I really like the car and made the right decision to buy it, but it was not fun. I then complained to Mazda USA about the first dealer and sent "angry" messages to the owners of the first dealer. I contacted them to get some accessories, and when they didn't process the "store credit", I hit the roof and was ready to picket in front of the dealer. The owner finally said just to give this "pain in the a__" his money back, so I got a $1000 credit.
Can anyone of you beat that??????
(And I still love the car.....)
