Ordered Rooftop Cargo Carrier

Oh yeah - thanks Sunlight. I missed that thread. I guess I don't spend enough time surfing this site...

Hey jack - I'm in the market for a rooftop cargo box, too. I was just fixin' to post on this topic - I saw a good review on the thule 667 on epinions.com from a Protege5 owner. Sounds like you got good price, too. My question, before buying it online - how much room for luggage would you say it has? Can you fit two medium/large-ish suitcases up there? The whole family -- me & the dear wife up front, baby in back seat and two dogs in the way-back -- are gonna be taking a lot trips come the holidays. And my wife likes to pack a lot of s**** (..I mean essential items) on trips like this. Thanks

BTW Jack and Ginger is my current drink of choice...when I can't afford Makers

It's about 55Lx35Wx18H", and much larger inside than it appears. You could easily get two, maybe even up to four golf bags in it. Two large suitcases should be no problem. I'll let you know exactly what I can fit after my camping trip in two weeks. :)

Yeah, the problem I have with that is our roofs dont have any rails to support weight. I'm planning on loading the cargo box with lots of camping gear and I don't want to dent the smooth roof.

my bag doesn't touch the roof in any spots besides it resting on the load bars.. . . i put 2 big rubbermaid boxes insde the bag to give the bag shape and with that a solid formation to make the bag a "box" that only stays on the factory load bars. . .i didnt' want any s*** touching my roof either

and it was good for around 15cu ft. . .a lil less since the platic tubs itself take up some room but not much

I'd like to know how much it kills the mpg too. I was thinking about thule's 8cuft box that has the hardware specific to the pro.

The pics of the 13 ft one does't look too bad. I found the 8 ft one for 160 online somewhere. I might check my price at the dealer for the 13ft one. Probably gonna need it around Christmas!

What's the model number for that 8 cu ft box? I've done a lot of research and the 13 ft one was the only one I saw specifically for the P5. 8 ft would have been to small for me anyway, but I'd like to see it just the same.

I doubt that MPG will be affected significantly, if at all with the 13 cu ft box.

I'll check the model #, I was looking on Thule's website. i dunno about the mpg, it's still a signifigant amount of area for the car to push. My parents minivan loses like 5 mpg with the box on.

Model is 682 sidekick. Thule.com, there is a fitment guide on the mainpage. There are 10 boxes that come up- I used 2002 mazda P5

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to order the Thule excursion 667? Preferably somewhere that they don't charge an arm & leg for shipping. Rosenthal Mazda, that was suggested earlier has a good price, but they want $140 for residental delivery (argh). Local dealer wants a little over 300 bones to get it for me.

I found it at my local Sears in the auto dept for about $235.00. It was a special order item. That was the best next to Rosenthal. I'm not surprised on the shipping. It's a big box.

hey jack,

any pics of it on your car? i'm gonna be moving soon and i'll rather get the cargo carrier now when i have more chance of saving some money than later when i'm all out of cash. thanks.

There are a couple of pictures posted in that long, previous thread about whether you like or don't like your roof rack.

I know this thread is a bit old - but if anyone wants the Mazda OEM roof cargo carrier for holiday travel, it works great. I tooka couple of pics

Thanks asterix, Been wanting some good pics of the US one. By any chance do you know the thule part/item number?

My mom bought a Forester in the spring and had been thinking about getting a cargo carrier for trips. After I got my P5, she bought this one since it fits both of our cars: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=AUTO&pid=02872000000 It's a Thule, $160 and she was able to get it in the store. My bf and I installed it this weekend on my car and it seems to be decent so far. We're driving down to Kentucky this weekend, 4 people + luggage, etc. so I'll see how well it does. I also plan to take some pics if anyone is interested.

wow...that thing is huge.. i guess you can put ALOT of things in it!

Thanks, I found out that the "mazda" one is a Thule 667 excursion 13 cu. ft. My dealer quoted me over 300 for it! I think I should be able to find it locally or online for around 200.

Wow, Katie 20 cubic feet! That's huge! Like almost bigger than the car. LOL.
