Custom Splash Guard Mudflaps 2008 Mazda5 GT
Here are some pictures of custom front and back splash guards for my 2008 Mazda5 GT.
If I remember right they are OEM off a low-mid 90's Honda civic coupe or second generation mid-90s acura integra, I can't recall exactly, but I think they are civic. My bro worked at a tuner shop and they routinely took these things off and chucked them. I know they had honda part number markings, and I think the four are off the same car.
I had these lying around in the garage and almost threw them away a few years ago. As luck would have it, they fit fairly well on the mazda5. The back two fit very well to the body. I mounted the back two to the existing three 'blanks' with speed nuts. The front I had to do more cutting/grinding with a dremel and a bit with the heat gun and leather gloves to get it to hug the fender and clear the "sharp" corner in the sill/skirt. This left a small exposed area where you can see some of the white from inside the wheel well, but it is not really noticable. The front I was able to match one hole to the exisiting wheel well fender screw with a speed nut, the second hole I drilled into the front of the sill and worked in a lock nut behind the sill on the inside. You don't have to remove the sill or tires, you can access the sill from the underside looking inside-outward. The sill is hollow, turn the front tires all the way to one side and you can stick your head in and look, it's tight but do-able.
The mud guards "stick out" about 1/4 inch wider than the fender, and this really helps to cut down on splash up, especially since the car sits so low to the ground. I don't know if I trust them to stand up to snowy winters, but here in So Cal that is not much of a worry. I will see how they hold up during our rainy season this winter.
Mazda really should make some mud flaps for the GT, I bet they would sell better than the cargo cover.
