Our spy photographers have captured the next-generation Mazda 3 MPS being put through its paces at the Nurburgring.

The new Mazda 3 will be going on sale in the UK in April next year, with the range-topping MPS version scheduled to arrive about three months later.

Under its all-new bodywork the new 3 is a heavy reworking of the current car, and the new MPS will stick with the same mechanical layout of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels.

the current MPSs direct-injection engine. Power figures havent been finalised yet, but theres the strong possibility that the new car will actually have slightly more than the 256bhp of the first-generation MPS.
Thats a serious amount for a front-wheel drive hatchback, especially as unlike the forthcoming Ford Focus RS the MPS wont get a limited-slip differential.

It's likely a second, diesel-powered MPS will follow. At a recent Mazda technical event a senior company engineer told Autocar that a high-output version of Mazdas new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine is under consideration for a performance variant of the 3. Renault and Seat have already done well from diesel versions of their hot hatches and Subaru is working on a DERV-fuelled Impreza WRX so it would be an obvious development.

The images make clear that Mazda has learned at least one lesson from the current MPS, which was criticised in some quarters for its bland looks. Even under the cladding, its clear that the new car is far more visually aggressive, with a deep front bumper and a very Impreza-like wing at the top of the tailgate.

Prices for the new MPS will be announced nearer the time, but its believed it will stick closely to the current models 19,000 price tag.

now thats a hood scoop... dayum!! and dual exhaust as well... i find it hard to believe the new model won't have a LSD while the last one did...??? makes no sense.

basically they've found to use the brake system for a non-lsd type drive. It supposedly works very well, however it cooks the brakes a little.

sad tho, cause I'm sure it's mostly for cost savings.

Looks pretty similar, would be interested to see what they did under that front mask, looks like it could be a little strange judging by the grill. Exciting stuff though cant wait to hear more about it.

BMW's starting to do the same thing. iirc the 135i has that bs.

BMWs have been using traction control for years instead of a LSD in non M models.

Yes, but their 'electronic differential' is a recent development. I remember a thread on here a few months back about it. IE: they're using it as a performance item instead of a safety item, if that makes any sense.

Yes all current models beside the M cars have the "electronic differential" where the M cars have a true LSD.

Very exciting. They're developing a 'speed version for the first production year of a body style. Is this a first? It makes sense to me. There's definitely a demand for this car. I like what I'm seeing so far.

*crosses fingers for sedan option*

where's that guy that wanted to put a wrx hood on a ms3? his wish may come true (lol2)

I like....wonder if the R3 wheels will come stock.

No awd system?

those arend R3 wheels...just base RX8 wheels and my guess is that they were just using these for testing on this car....

Probably right concerning the testing. And I was looking at design...didn't realize the wheels on the car were not forged.
