(spin) i might be getting a bike within the next month or so! Due to crazy gas prices and having a long commute to work, my mazda3 just isn't cutting it lately.

any suggestions for what kind I should get? I've been looking at a lot of Kawasaki Ninja's, especially the 250 and 500 ones, mostly because they are pretty small, fast, and look really nice

yay for cheap(er) insurance, good gas milage, and sport bikes :) *and for summer and the semester being ALMOST over*

hopefully within the next two weeks i'll have my permit and find a bike class to sign up for

If you are looking for gas mileage, and don't care about blazing fast speeds, the Ninja 250 is a great bike. Gas should be around 70-80 MPG. Top speed is over 100, so you won't have any problem diriving it anywhere.

Most Americans want bigger and faster bikes, but if you don't need that, why pay for it?

I used to sell and I still own scooters. There are a lot of 250cc scooters that will fill the bill as well. The advantage of the scooter is lots of storage. You can't carry much on a Ninja, but a scooter with a luggage box, and the underseat storrage, you can do even light grocery shopping. That's why they out number motorcycles in the rest of the world.

So there, let the scooter jokes and insults start now...

haha scooters are awesome!!

i commute to work though and i don't think a scooter could handle 20 miles each way of highway driving every day. i like the 250 because like you said it's small and i don't need to be going over 100mph on a bike, i'm all set with that!! i don't need to worry to much about grocery shopping and storage, everything i need can fit in my backpack :)

Vespa :)

Have you had a bike before? You could get like a Katana 600 or something. Ugly, but light and inexpensive. Ive never owned a Kawa but ive had a few GSXR's and R1's.

nope i've never had a bike and i've never even driven one. yea i like the 250 cuz it's pretty light and inexpensive. isn't a vespa like a scooter?

haha yea vespa is a scooter and no I'm pretty sure you dont need a license for a scooter.

Maybe I can get a bike down to the cape run for you and you can have a crash course.

haha i actually just got my permit thursday. the test was really easy and i signed up for a class that's the monday after the cape run. yay! i'm wicked excited about it.

scooter licenses are different in all states. In OK, you need moto license for anything with 2 wheels.

In many states, if engine is less than 50cc, no license is needed.

In most states if it is over 50cc, then license is needed.

Vespa is a brand of scooter.

There's a lot of misinformation on scooters.

I think for first time rider, the 250 is the way to go. I've been riding for almost 20 years, and I considering a Ninja 250 because I don't care about speed, and you can go forever on a gallon of gas.

I've ridden one of these 250cc bikes and I am very impressed. If you have a dealer local, check it out. http://www.hyosungmotorsusa.com/product/introduction.asp?Cat=StreetBike&model=GT250

They are Korean, and good quality build.
Their 650 is a rocket.
