Holy Floormats Batman!

In my Mz5 '08 Sport - I noticed that there is a metal grommet on the drivers side floor mat. I've seen this before on other makes of cars I've had. What I can't find, is also what I've had on those same cars: a small metal post that comes up from the floor by under the driver - so that you can put the metal grommet over the post and this keeps mat in place - preventing it from drifting. I think it's done as a safety measure to prevent the mat from going up towards the accelerator or brake pedals.

Is my car missing the small metal post?

Thanks in advance.

I've got the winter mats and the grommet with the metal post doesn't work. The little metal post keeps coming out and the carpet constantly slides under the clutch.

Very bad engineering.

I noticed post is not coming off the floor. It's like a metal plate with post at one end and secured at the other end somewhere below the seat. check under seat maybe it is just swung in.

Here you go, a pic. It is easy to spot

...and I need to vacuum the car this weekend (shady)...

Thanks for the pic coolmazda5 - it was worth more than a 1000 words. (I assume this picture is from your '08 and not your '06 - right?)

So I've got the screw there - but no hanger attached to it. Very close behind the screw, the carpet has a machine made cut that looks like it might be designed to allow a little pressure from a screwed in hanger to not mess up the carpet. (I also noted that the passenger side also has a parallel screw in the same spot - without the cut behind it.)

All that said, the mat seems to fit into the floor pan (which indents there) really well. The mat also has "spikes' that seem to hold it in place - it doesn't seem like it's going to drift.

Maybe it's one more example of poor dealer prep?

Thanks.

With our car the hook thing came with the mats.

While on the subject of mats does anybody know where you can get all weather mats (rubbery/plasticy ones) for a right hand drive Mazda 5? Mazda UK say there's no demand for them so only supply carpet ones. Eldest son is a cross country runner so really do need some.

Never understood why they don't have the hook on both driver's side and pass side. I understand that the driver's side is a safety issue and pass is not, but do they actually think I like repositioning my pass side floor mat once a week? Not really a big deal, just a penny-pinching annoyance.

I've seen only another UK Mazda5 fellow around here (or should I say "mate"? ;)), but I'm surprised because of a) the amount of yearly rain where you live and b) the damn car is made in Japan, so right hand drive accessories w/ no strings attached (and yeah, they also get some rain and snow), oh well...

Yah but the one on the driver's side keeps coming out all the time anyways....(boom01)

It can't cost much for hooks on both sides. My former car, Acura TSX, had two hooks on each side. Held them in perfectly. I was surprised at how small and flat the Mazda all weather mats are. My Acura all weather mats had a nice lip on them to hold in whatever was dropped on them.

Yummm, Acura TSX, nice car. But, now, if we move to its parent Honda, when I bought my Honda (new) the OEM mats were extra!

Overall I'm OK with the basic stuff included on the Mazda5. At the end, come on, it is a Mazda and does not cost $54,395.00 :D

Do the winter mats cover the whole vehicle, or just the front seat area?

So I finally got the "Floormat Bracket" for my Mz5 from www.OnlineMazdaParts.com Part# BTAC68685. I was expecting a part that looked like (what I believe) I saw in the picture that coolmazda5 posted. It looks to me like a metal hook, held in place by the screw on the floor, below the drivers seat. This part (see pics) is an all plastic piece without any holes in it at all. I'm not sure if this is the right part and/or I'm just too dumb to figure out how to install it. Look at the picture and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks in Advance.

I had one of those in my glovebox when I bought mine. That's what I thought it was when I found it. And that is where it still is. I have the flat, metal post on the drivers side holding my floormat.

I think you have to make 2 cutsin the carpet. One to slide it in the other to lock it down. It looks just like the floormat holder that was in my Focus.

So here's the answer I got from JM at www.OnlineMazdaParts.com today:

"That clip replaces the old bracket style hook.

There are not any instructions that I can find. However that old bracket used to go into a slit in the carpet and bolt down. The new clip style is supposed to clip to the existing hole slit."

I did notice that there is a slit cut into the carpet, just behind the screw (where I was expecting a metal hook to be held down) - I'll take a closer look and see what I can do and let you know the results. It might be a few days - I have a busy weekend.

(confused) OK - so I tried to figure this out - but the new bracket doesn't seem to naturally fit in anywhere, without some kind of modification.

Look at the pictures. I removed the screw in front of where there is a pre-cut slot in the carpet - and I put the new bracket along side just so you can see the situation. I was thinking I could slide the bracket into the precut slot - and maybe - if I also take out the plastic fixture/grommet-thingie that the screw goes into, the hole left behind might be wide enough to accommodate the front of the bracket. (The picture still shows it in place.) But even removing the plastic grommet - the hole is only about half the width it needs to be. But even if I make some cuts to extend it - if you look at the pictures - you'll see the metal grommet of the mat is much further away - and seems tailored to fit exactly where it is.

Do I need to make a total different set of cuts in the carpet a few inches further towards the firewall? The carpet seems to clng tightly to the floor - so not sure how I might do it.

Thanks in Advance for any/all thoughts.
