leaky turbo and whistling...

looking for some input on this problem...

1.) there seems to be oil leaking from the turbo there is some on the inside of my intake, so i replaced the pcv with the millenia sc one...but there is still a leak...it is hard to tell where it is coming from but it has dripped onto the top of the s-pipe and seems to have sprayed other parts under the car while driving...however when parked there is no dripping or puddle under the car. Boost is fine, radiator was just fixed because a rock busted through, everything seems normal except there is a high pitched wistling under boost.

Any thoughts?

The leak is probably nothing other then the o-rings on the oil return line of the turbo. I have the same thing...i just received my $1.50 o-rings and am about to replace. Does your leak look something like this?

And for the screeching sound...mine did that when I was completely stock. Once I upgraded smic, hard pipes, intake and exhaust, I haven't heard it since. But know that I think of it, I think the screeching sound stopped after i switched to synthetic oil...who knows.

yeah it looks like that and there was also some that dripped onto the top of where the j and s pipe connect. So hopefully i can just replace the rings...as for the screeching i dunno what that might be...it did sound like the turbo before i added mods like u were saying, but now it doesnt even sound like it is coming from that part of the car...well i dunno i'll change the o rings and see what happens. Thanks.

nah im not under warranty anymore. I dunno if its blown or on its way out. It boosts fine and is maintaining the right pressure without spiking. The only issue is a little oil...which looks a lot like the pic above and this whistle. I just had my radiator fixed (they patched a hole in the existing core) maybe the whistling has something to do with the air flowing through the section that was fixed (they like crushed in a little section and soldered some stuff over the holes).

hmm not too comforting...fortunately im gonna have my friend who is a master tech check it out...i can barely afford the 1.50 for new o-rings for the return line so i seriously hope the turbo isnt shot.

I noticed this whistling too. It got even louder when I put my cai on. Then I bought a hot pipe and now it just sounds smooth and feels smooth too. I figured it was the crack I had in my bpv nipple........

I would take off your heat shield and look at the manifold. Turns out the manifolds like to crack and whistle....

hey thanks for the advice fellas, i actually do have some hairline cracks in the exhaust manifold...but i knew of this before the whistling.

the problem turned out to be with my radiator...i had a pin hole leak that a buddy patched up for me...this is when the whistling started...then the patch he made failed and i had to have him touch it up again. now that i reinstalled it the whistling is gone. It must have just been a whistle from the air passing through the area he patched up.

My turbo still has the oil leak but at least it has one less symptom!

PS. anyone know where i can get an exhaust manifold that is the same quality that MAM used to make? Those things were awesome. I had my eyes on the tubular or the bullhorn one for the longest time and now there is no way to get them.

sorry to thread jack, but i also have to oil leak around my turbo. is the best place to get the o-rings from the dealer? or if someplace else, what part #? thanks

Whistling is Wastegate!! Id put my money on that you blew that. It happened to me where anytime i drove id hear it and even at a standstill it continued. So embarrassing, but better than a blown Turbo. When you go to the shop, make sure u let them hear it instead of trying to discribe it. Mine was covered under warranty.

ok this is a thread i started a couple months ago but ive found no resolution to my prob...actually i havent done much myself to resolve it but ive got a new observation about the problem that might help...and hopefully you guys out there can give me some advice....

1.)there is no wastegate problem...i took care of the whistling problem(it was related to a hole in the radiator)

2.) i am finding small puddles of oil under the turbo area of the car after i drive it...however it doesnt start to drip right when i park it...it seems like i drive it for awhile park it and then much later after the car has cooled down there ends up being a small small puddle of fresh oil.

3.) It looks like there is crusty oil residue built up on the part of the turbo you can clearly see when you just look right down at it.

4.) it might be a different problem, but it also looks like 1/3 of the way down the underside of the car has been splattered with a light spray of oil...maybe trans fluid...i cant tell because there is no build up but it is slippery and dirty(looks more like oil)

5.) I cant figure this s*** out...but i figure it could be one of a few things

-the o-ring in the return line is busted (would this cause a spray of oil on the underside of the car?)

-i have noticed that i get oil in my intake...probably blowby from the case(but i have a PCV valve from the supercharged millenia...would enough oil be able to go into the intake that it would go into the turbo and seep through the seals?) (should i try a breather valve on the case for awhile?)

-the turbo seals might just be leaking themselves....

seriously help me out guys...and if it might be the o-ring is there a write up on how to check or change the ring? ive never had to disconnect it before and i dont know what im looking for. I know a lot of guys have had some leaky turbos so tell me what you know!

oh and i forgot to mention...my boost is steady and where it is supposed to be, wastegate is fine, and this is the only problem i have been having.

EDIT: the pic from jaysasnooch in the earlier posting is how my turbo looks....it also looks like one of the studs from the spipe (one of the two on the heatshield has broken off...)

the whistling is when the wastegate is opened slightly.. not fully opened..

look at it this way... ya know when you take an inflated balloon and strech the opening and it make s a whisling sound while it deflates? well it's like that.. when fully opened it does do that sound but when it's like 2-3 psi,(on mine) it does..

DAMN you just solved one of my probs... where you been?! now on to the motor?!!>

I would just change the o-ring and go from there. I changed mine recently and it took a few minutes with the right tools...I think the guy needed an allen key socket for the 2 screws. You unscrew and disconnect the oil return from the turbo and whatever is left of the old dried up o-ring should be found on the housing. I did it while the car was on the lift, getting an oil change...makes it alot easier.

The o-ring on mine was definitatly my problem....yours might be even more severely due for a change. I wouldn't be surprised if it solves your oil leak.

But either way, you need to find time, put your car on a lift and inspect that oil splatter your talking about. Goodluck!

werd will do...i take it if you arent changing the oil youre going to end up with a face full of oil if you take the line off with oil in the car?
