Just take it out?

Hey ya'll. I hate to ask this question, because I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get laughed at, but I have a buddy who has a Civic (big shocker) that he took out the ECU out to avoid restrctive fuel flow. Can we do that, or would it mess everything up?

dood, your car will not run without the ECU. Tell your civic friend to lay off the rice for a bit, its killing his brain cells.

LOL.... I thought so. I actually argued with him for a while, but he was determined that it was the solution to all my problems. I guess the only way to overcome our retarded ECU is to get a stand alone.

 Might as well take off two of the wheels too, it decreases rolling resistance. :D Sorry couldn't help it. Most (if not all) cars will not run at all withoug their ECU.

Please explain to me how removing the ECU avoids restrictive fuel flow?? Are you sure he was talking about the right part?? Not bashing you, I'm just curious about why your friend would be that dumb:)

I honetly don't know. He kept telling me that all it does is governs airflow/fuel, and if I took it out, it would just be set at default. Man, I better shut up before i dig a deeper hole, cuz this guy confused the hell out of me! I thought I understood the basics of the ECU, but he threw me for a loop, and me being new to the "aftermarket" trend... well, no need to explain any further.

I can't hate on the fact that your buddy drives a civic because I think they are great project cars (EG6 or EK9 hatch with a jspec B16A is a very fun car to drive). I must hate on the fact that he's a jackass for thinking his car is going to run without the ECU. Morons like that shouldn't be fixing up cars. Just my .02 ;)

I don't know about removing it all together, but you can chip it, or install an aftermarket ECU that will remove the governor(like the Civic could even hit it's gov.), raise the redline(fuel cutoff), and give you new fuel maps. I've got a Dinan ECU in my Civic and it definately an improvement over stock.

yah, I don't think he replaced anything, no piggy back or stand alone... I don't even think he has a chip.. oh well. What's a good deal on a stand alone?

It would be like taking the CPU out of your computer that you are using to type these messages. IT WONT WORK.

dood if you want to go faster just save weight, take out your engine and wheels its the best way!

Removing the doors could help too. Just get some of those saftey nets that the NASCAR people use!!

Taking out the car`s ECU, is just like removing your "brain" from your head............Dog won`t hunt!(smash) (freak)

The civic guy

Ok, wise asses, enough's enough. When I, the Civic guy, told him about all that ECU nonsense, I was talking about revamping his fuel system, and gettin an adjustable FPR/fuel pump so he can either richen or lean his fuel flow. We were talking about ECU's in that conversation, so I could see where the confusion kicked in. Whatever. Smartasses. ;)

here is my new light weight race car

if you are seriously intrested in getting a tunable ECU talk to Perfworks on this board. He's got a nice small piggyback unit that will control fuel, ignition, etc for a little under 700.00. For the tunability it offers and the price, its better than a 2000.00 standalone system, plus you don't have to rewire the entier engine harness and add extra sensors.

Yup, 20ESGUY beat me to it.

You should definitely check out Perf's piggyback unit - it sounds as if it will definitely resolve many of the fuel cut issues that the MSP owners are running into. It's programmable, fits into your hand and can handle further mods like turbo kits when you go that route.

There is only one possible solution. Take your friends ECU from his honda and hold it hostage for a week. See how all that performance works out for him.
