So what's the deal with this car?

Thank you. And I know we all know what they look like, but here's a pic.

LOL - Sweet! I never really get tired of looking at it. I thought that my miata was the only car that i'd park and look back at as I'm walking away....nope! I always check it out - just because I really like the way it looks.

Congrats! Welcome!

I'm a 34yo mom of 2 (7 and 4) - admittedly I'm a gearhead. Never wanted a minivan EVER - but was beginning to feel the pressing need for one - the first time I saw the 5 was as an ad banner on edmunds.com - I was starstruck - a 5 speed! Be still my heart!! The next week, I was banging down the door at the dealership and they hadn't even gotten one in yet.

You misspelled "wagon". :)

To answer the original question, I'm a thirty-something father of two boys and a new baby girl. If I didn't have kids I'd be in a Mazda MX-5 (or maybe the RX-8, that was nice too), or Mini Cooper or something else along those line. But with the kids I had to get something else. Before I learned about the 5 I was considering the Scion xB, Toyota Matrix, and PT Cruiser, but the Mazda 5 was much better for my needs.

It's gotten a lot of looks and positive comments, and in the last month or so I'm seeing a few more pop up on the roads. Most of the drivers look like younger adults, probably new parents, from what I've seen.

hehe, you can't get that past my wife. But once she saw it, it became a cool car, more then it's label.

As far as being underpowered- I scoff at the notion that the 5 is underpowered and ask who is responsible for the scale in which car HP is measured? Does that guy drive a hemi? Desire to get 15 MPG!?!?

I mean seriously, unless you have 4 250lb football players in tow, the 5 has plenty of power. My Jetta was 105hp and power was really never a problem for me. The 5 zips along, I leave people in the dust. No, I won't be entering many street races or driving to Vegas in 5 hours, but those aren't the reasons that led me to buy the 5. It's under powered to NASCAR maybe, but not to your everyday driver who likes to drive, not win races.

well said Kid Red.

I agree. The car is not fast but its fast enough. You can beat most people with 2x the horsepower off the line simply because in the average situation most people are going to accelerate from a stop at the same speed. If you want to go faster, you don't need more power than the guy next to you, you just need to put your foot on the gas.

40 yo mom of three here. We bought it when our third was on the way. It's great for tooling around town, a little tight with kids and groceries at the same time. Love the five speed, just wish it was a turbo like my Passat (husband drives that now) - have to remember to downshift to pass on the highway, instead of just punching it like I could in my VW. Otherwise, I LOVE this car so far. We've had it since September (less 39 days for the recall) and so far I've only seen three others in our area outside DC.

Welcome!

Congratulations! I hope Matthew likes his new brother?

Thanks!

So far, so good. Peter is doing great! He eats, poops, and sleeps (in that order).

But Matthew got the flu three days after we brought Peter home from the hospital. Poor little guy has projectile vomitting for a while there. Thank goodness for carpet steamers...

On the other hand, I did make the run to the hospital in record time in the Mazda5.

:)

Love the Pearl White

My wife and I also love the pearl white. We are in our late 20's. We got the 5 around two weeks ago.

Got the 5 back in August. We're mid-30s, first child born in June. We needed something that could hold the baby seat, stoller, diaper bag, and all the associated gear.

I couldn't bring myself to buy a minivan, so we were looking at: Honda CRV, Mazda Trib, Nissan X-Trail, Mercedes ML320 (used), Audi A4 wagon (used), etc. etc.

Then I saw a commercial for the 5 (the one with the guy in the leather jacket with the baby strapped to his chest - great commercial). I thought: "That looks kinda cool".

Price was the clincher. I never even test drove it. Just went and did the deal. And I couldn't be happier with the choice. We love it. It's technically my wife's car, but I look forward to driving it around all weekend.

Mid 30's car guy with three kids (two in car seats). Traded a 2005 Nissan Altima on the 5 and bought the 3 two weeks later. Already had a 400hp car and a motorcycle in the garage for when I want speed.

Mid 30s guy with 2 small girls ( 7 and 3 ) Its our only car and we love it. Traded in my beloved '99 Jetta for it and I don't regret it for a minute! The 5 is a sweet ride with plenty of power - any more and I'd be on a first name basis with our friendly neighbourhood police department. Just the other day I was keeping up nicely with a Dodge Hemi Truck doing 150kph and later left him in my wake as we hit the winding part of the road. (The girls were at home with their mom - incase you were thinking I would do that with 2 little ones strapped in the back).

We've had our 5 since July of 2005 and the only disappointment so far has been the gas mileage - I expected better. But.... since making a few modifications to our driving and gas choices, we've been getting 2-3mpg better which just gets us in under what Mazda had spec'd.

Mazda got this one right!! (canada)

Hi Greenridge,

Another fan of the pearl white here. I saw one just like yours parked in front of my neighbours' house. Any chance your parents (inlaws?) live on Wrenwood Cres. in Centrepointe?

Hey... good eye.
Yup, thats me at my inlaws. Do you drive a 5 too?

Oh, the power of Mazda5! It brings neighbours closer together!! (drinks)

Mazda5 is one of the cars on my short list. Thinking about it...

no turbo

No. Just No. It's not designed to be a GTI. It's a mini mini-van and 1/4 mile times wouldn't even come to mind with anyone seriously looking at getting a Mazda5. 20 more HP wouldn't hurt but the goal is approx $20K micro-van, and it seems very flexible. Fully loaded it will be slower I imagine, but it's rare that all six seats will be full of 180 pound adults with some gear.

We're getting one this fall to replace our aging Grand Caravan, which if freakin huge and 18mpg, and starting to fall apart at 87K miles.

Well, I would not consider it too quick if it's run the 1/4 mile at about 17.5 average (that's what consumer reports said anyways). Even my Escort will do high 15's to 16's stock. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that it's a complete slug. The engine gets you up and moving at a decent rate, but they should have offered a turboed or supercharged edition.

Stop thinking - get out there and get one!! You won't regret it!!! You get one hell of a car for the price!! (canada) (2thumbs)

If you lookin for one in ottawa its like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Pickings are slim but the 5 is still availible. If its not on the lot or incoming its possibly 3 months away.........
