Possible vacuum/boost leak?

(I mentioned this in some thread about engines blowing, but I don't think it's detonation anymore.)

Last week I installed my AWR front motor mount and Kartboy bushings, and the day after, when I was driving to school, I heard this obnoxious "pinging" sound. I found that I would only hear it if I was in gear (it doesn't occur in Neutral), and only if it were in vacuum or boost (like, if I had the throttle where the boost gauge reads close to 0 psi, then the sound goes away). It's very slight, too, so that if I have the window open I cannot hear it, and I think it's coming from either the center or the passenger's side of the engine bay.

I thought it might be detonation, at first, but after a week the car's still driving fine and it would be really weird to have detonation just because of an aftermarket motor mount and/or shifter bushings. I'm thinking it could be something loose and rattling, too, but I don't see that correlates to hearing it only in severe vacuum or in boost.

So I'm thinking it's a leak. I checked the engine bay and I see that there is one vacuum line that is cracked at the opening - see attached picture - and this one is located behind the middle of the intake manifold (does anyone know what size the vacuum hose is, so I can buy a replacement?). I haven't looked closely at all of them though. Also, I tried flooring it in 2nd, and it would spike to 6.0 and then drop quickly to 5.5; I'm pretty sure (but not 100% positive) that I used to boost 6.5 but I know how it fluctuates from car to car.

Edit: Looks like Hosetechniques is having a 25% off sale! Question is, I heard that the lines (for the Protege kit) don't really fit ours that well. What're your recommendations?

The cracked hose definately needs fized ASAP. If you keep running it like that, you ECU will incorrectly adjust the long term fuel trim.

I don't know why you are pinging. I would need to hear it for myself. Does it only happen at high RPM? The stock T's and hoses are extremely weak and will crack. You need silicone hoses which you can buy at any parts store. You can take it a step furhter and order a Brake Booster kit from Street Unit.

When you install your new hoses, make sure you zip tie the ends to the T's to prevent them from popping off. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I don't think it's the same "pinging" from detonation, I just don't know how else to describe the sound. Maybe I could say it sounds like a string of repeated "popping"? As for when it happens, it happens when I'm not in neutral and when the boost gauge either reads close to 20 vac or it is in boost.

I've never heard of the Brake Booster kit, I'll go check that out right now.

Also, how well do you recommend the Hosetechniques kit? I've heard there were some fitment issues, yet others have said it was good. And it's on sale right now.

i am going to go with a noisy boost gauge. i had the same problem with my boost gauge. you should have someone ride with you and get close to the gauge and listen to it

Are you shitting me?

Are you sure? The boost gauge came with the car when I bought it, and I've never heard any noise until now. And I'm pretty certain the noise is coming from my right rather than from my left.

Hm, I assume I can fix that by resetting the ECU, after getting the new hoses?

Again, can anyone vouch for the Hosetechniques set? If I'm going to get it, I'd better get it before the 25% off sale is over.

Ya a reset would fix it but this would take a long time to happen anyways. Atleast several hundred miles. It would also depend on exactly where the leak is at and how you drive your car.

If this is the wastegate sensor line and that thing pops off one day..... bad things can happen. I am sure the hose techniques set is fine.

Okay I think I've figured out that the "sound" happens when I'm (A) in gear, and (B) I'm either off the throttle or boosting. So what do you guys think, vacuum leak?

I think I've also figured out how to describe the sound... It sounds like crickets chirping at night, except that it's continuous and fainter. Or you could say it sounds like something very small is rattling.

I ordered the Hosetechniques kit, but it's on sale because they're closed til Jan 2nd so it'll be almost two weeks before I get it, I assume. So I bought 1 foot of hosing from Hightempsilicone, and hopefully that'll get here soon.

Bump. Does my newer clarification/description clear things up more?

Well... no it wouldn't for anyone. Sorry.

Could this be a belt? LSD?

Yeah, I'm using stock IC pipes. I thought it was something mechanical at first, too, but seeing as how the sound only happens while I'm in boost (or off the throttle)...

I didn't realize we were talking about stock pipes. Those pipes are notorious for two things: Boost leaks and boost falling. They don't really seal all that well at the joints and When they are hot, they will inflate like a baloon after the turbo and wastegate agree to 6 psi. When they inflate, there is now more room hence a loss in pressure. Then when you stop boosting, they drop back down. They don't inflate very much but enough to see it on the boost guage.

If you ever feel like driving 6 hours to Fot Walton beach, I'd be glad to look at it for ya! LOL!

wow i think my car does the same thing when im boosting my car hesitates a lot and im really pissed because i cant find the problem!!!

I dunno, it was like a sudden change. First it was normal, then suddenly one day I heard the noise. I didn't really feel much power loss, though...

Oh well, can't wait for the vacuum hoses.

There are a lot of people complaining about that. I am not sure where your "pissed" threshold is, but if it is really really bad and you are stock, you may want to pay the dealership a visit.

Have you guys tried resetting the ECU? WOn't make the noise go away, but it may take away the hesitation... but then again, probably not!

i would just cut the cracked part off and either zip tie or super glue the edges to seal it until your new hoses come in.
