i'm also a P5 auto and have asked this same question (as well all have)
this is what i've been told from forum members...

if n/a...

Header:
obx or reactive header (removes 1st or pre-cat...whatever its called)
i was told to get it ceramic coated

Catback Exhaust - in order of loudness (soft to loud):
Racing Beat
Magnaflow
Megan
Mazdaspeed
Corksport

Intake:
Injen CAI
K&N Typhoon
WeaponR Secret Weapon
Ebay versions with a K&N filter

i've only heard the racing beat, megan, and magnaflow exhausts so far and i must say...magnaflow has the deepest growl and lowest tone...the megan is a deep growl but not the lowest of tones...the racing beat almost sounds like the stock exhaust

the rest is just what i've been told from other members...everyone has an opinion, ya know

Don't forget the lightweight underdrive crank pulley or MAM Hi-flow mid-pipe.

None :) the price you pay for the amount of power you get isn't worth it.

The best and cheapest mod to do is always keep it clean, well maintained and respectable + the aforementioned intake/header/catback as well as some springs.

to make it faster, you cant do anything. the auto isnt strong enough for a turbo. intake & exhaust do very little. suspension makes this car alot more fun so imo thats where to do your mods

the auto can handle a turbo, just at low boost (6-8psi MAX)

yeah, but who ISN'T power hungry? from what i've heard, its really hard to keep the greed from making that psi rise, and rise...lol

L8R, definitely got a point, but it will give you some gains, mostly making the car react and feel better, as it should've from the factory really...a little more fun in the driver seat for $1000 +/- (installing it all yourself of course)...i'll take that over frying my tranny with the turbo...i know i'd be boosting higher and higher...

With the lack of power with the auto, best bet seems to be to mod for the curvies, auto x! I think thats what I'm going to go for.

i have an auto and i'm boosted, 5psi, it makes a world of difference on an automatic...it's a whole new car...we'll see how it holds up....i don't beat on it but i have to say....i enjoy opening her up and blowing by a lot of cars i could never pass before...it makes a fun handling car a whole lot more fun and respectable...i'd say if you got the cash (low budget kit for $3500 +-) and you really like the car go for it...!

if you got the cash to fork over like 2-4k go with a lentec built tranny then turbo but i think for 6-8k you can trade the protege5 in for a manual or a better base to start off with.

Nice. Like what you've done there!........

thanks...i've spent way to much money on this car, but i gotta tell you, i was away for a week and couldn't wait to get home and take her for a spin!! i've had a lot of cars and this one is by far the most fun to drive :)

Mine's not turbo but I feel the same way about driving it from day to day. Is it sick to be excited about going to work & back every day just because of getting to drive the car? Love the sport auto, addicted to the exhaust sound, love checking out on people with faster cars in traffic or curves. This car is fun regardless of power level. Balance rules. Drive on!
