Type of enclosure

Ok, so I may or may not be getting an additional subwoofer for the trunk of my MSP. I'm looking at 10inchers, power appropriately. My question is, what type of enclosure will sound best in the trunk, without taking up much space?
I listen moslty to rock and punk, but sometimes I'll listen to some rap or techno. So basically I want something that will punch well with the drums in rock and punk type music, but still sound good with rap and techno tpye bass hits. I also would like it to not sound like s*** for the bass guitars in music....so sound people, give me some suggestions on what type of enclosure you would recomend to me. Keep in mind I want this to be space friendly....I do enjoy having trunk space.

i have 2 10s in a ported enclosure. i know u want space friendly subs but just tellin u that the ported enclosure is really "crisp" in my car. the bass hits well and is pretty clean. i jus hooked the 2 10s up to the stock amp and trust me there is plenty of power to the subs. i often have to turn the bass down on the faceplate.

Well, what I was hoping to do was keep the stock setup running, and then add the additional amp/sub setup. Also, I've heard that running subs under-powered is just as bad as running them way overpowered. SO I'm matchin the amp and sub, so it's just a matter of the enclosure. But that awesome that you saved money and have the stock amp working for you, it's a decent little booger, and is fairly capable.

With the ported enclosure, does it provide good all around sound? like, does it provide good all around sound for all types of music without distorting the sound too much.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

Don't bother keeping the stock system. Get ambitious and make your own custom fiberglass enclosure in the back right corner of the trunk. It's fun and it's worth while. It will cost you about $100 for all the glass, resin, body filler, etc.

You can't beat the sound quality of a sealed box. Quality=sealed volume=ported There are ported setups that sound great it's just harder to get right. With (2) 10's I don't think it would be that big of a box. 12's would require a much bigger box than 10's. Pull the stock sub out it'll sound better and free up alot of space. Subs that are not matched will typically fight each other (out phase) and you'll end up with less bass than running just the 10's.

All good points. For the type of music you listen to, I would suggest one 12" sub in a sealed box. Custom making it out of fiberglass in one of the corners will save a lot of trunk space. You could mount the amp for the sub with a custom mount where the stock set up is sitting. That will keep it out of the way and protect it from anything you put in the trunk.

ive had my setup for over 6 months with zero problems and im always in my car. i find that the quality is quite good for any genre. anyways, if i screw up my amp which i doubt will happen, i can throw the 8 in in and take it to the dealer under warranty.

This is my 12w6v2 in my built to spec box that I built for it. SQ is great and it's can go low and deep when i feel like cranking it up.

I would definitely go with a sealed enclosure. Just make sure you buy a quality speaker and enclosure. If you are keeping the stock amp, set it up in mono and run it to a nice 10" sub in a sealed encloure, it won't take up much room at all. If I were you I would just ditch the stock sub and enclosure all together. I had a lot of problems with rattling the rear deck when I turned it up loud.

I ended up buying a Sony XS - L102P5 and I have it in a small sealed enclosure thats not much bigger that a cubic ft. so it doen't take up much space, and removed the stock kenwood sub. Its so loud that I have my NF output at -9 and bass setting at -3 for normal listening. You'll never miss the stock kenwood 8".
