Bounced off rev limit, AGAIN!

Damn, thats twice in 2 months. Last night I just REinstalled my SMIC,hardpipes, intake, and unichip. Decided to go for a drive. Got reved on by a Z24 Cavalier of all things. I gave him 1.5 c/l head start and pulled past him high in second. Thats when I hit the damn Rev limiter. I think I need a big muscle car tach or something. Only problem is I dont have a Camaro or a Mullet for that matter. Seriously though, since I cant seem to pay attention to the tach, maybe bc I have my wheel too low and I cant see it. I know bouncing off the rev limiter is bad, but does anyone know how bad, or what the ecu technically does when it hits? I wonder if the unichip can be tuned to have the rev limiter right around 6600rpm(peak power?). This only happens when Im running w/ someone.
(shrug)

Eh, it's not too horrible to hit it. It's there to protect the motor. Just train yourself to shift when you begin to feel the power drop off...around 6K or so.

just get a shift light and hook it to your stock tach........... i have a big tach just for the reason i could not see mine and i pay more attention to my boost and a/f when i am racing then my speed so i put a tach in that line of sight......... but since you say you need a mullett for one of them they make shift lights for your stock one.................

I was just kidding about that, but seriously , every time Ive ever seen a monster tach, its been inside or on the hood of a Camaro or Mustang with a hood scoop.LOL

I noticed that when I hit rev limit, it almost seems like the 2 stage stutter box I had on my GSXR1100. I had it set at 6k for launching. That killed two cylinders (or something like that). Does ours kill spark, fuel, or what?

Shift light sounds like a good idea. Any links or ideas. Some of those big tachs are expensive.

Thanks guys

ya most people here dont like my setup but i dont care...... it serves a purpose and looks good at shows....... anyway just figured i would share

the rev limiter just pulls the ignition. not too bad for the engine. try turning down your radio you should be able to hear it rev up.

I bounced off of mine running with one of the RX-8 guys. Those things are geared drastically different and rev so much higher that the shift points are way different. Threw me for a loop. I blew some black smoke when I took 3rd.

How hard is that shift light to install? I'd love to have one.
My turbo timer has a rev warning. It has a programmable beeping. i have it set so that at 4000 rpm it starts beeping slowly and around 5700 it starts to beep like crazy and that is how i know when to shift.

you have to buy an rpm activation switch according to the website. it whould not be hard with that switch. only thing i like abt mine is i can adjust it easily.....

shane shane shane lol ...was the cavy white? i have a guy in a white slammed cavy try to mess with me all the time...it was an awesome day last night to go for a drive, matt and i went out at like 1am and I didn't get home till 3 lol. Anyways you should be able to feel the power drop even with the unichip ,I know I did. Anyone that ever drop my car said they felt it drop. I know how when you are racing sometimes you forget to pay attention b.c that happened to me once .oops... Anyways I think you should get a huge 8" tach you know to go with your "low key" bright as yellow car haha. You know I had to throw that in lol (laugh)

I drove an 86 RX-7 for over 10 years, u dont make any power till around 5 or 6k.
U can rev to 11 or 12k in a 13B. I also had ceramic apex seals (rings for you piston guys).

So which tt has that rev sensor? I also like the light idea.
By the way I have to turn off my stereo even if Im looking for an address, let alone racing, lol.

redline in a car is based around volumetric efficiency, which depends upon intake runners/valve sizes. once this engine speed is determined the structural aspects of the engine are designed with a safety factor of course.

so redline is not an indication of the physical limits of an engine. unless you start floating valves. but the rev limiter will stop you before you get there.

shift lights are cool, we use one in our honda ITA car.

The only time I've ever really hit the rev limiter was when I first got my snows put on, and it was wet, and I kinda lit them up like I was try to, but wasn't, I was just trying to launch, and the wet ground, matched with the lower traction of my snows over summer tires, cause me to brake loose huge....and I bounced off the limiter a few times...thats what it's there for, protect the engine, so you shouldn't be to worried....of course, I wouldn't go bouncin off it as a shift point every day, all day, eventually it will take a toll, but once in a while, is just fine. But yeah, those shift lights are a good idea, so long as you don't get one thats too bright, then they are great. My friend has one in his mustang, and it's kinda fun to watch, cause he's a drag racer, and has practiced so much, that the second that light even begins to light, he's shifting....it's an art. And you must be very easily distracted if you have to turn your radio off to do anything...lol...I can have it blasting, be carrying a conversation over the music, and still be able to remember directions I read before I left...oh, and I can still drive when I do this, not just kinda coast all over the road like I see some people do.

Well, how about buying a "race" car and take it to the track. Drive your MSP like a sane person and quit street racing.

Sorry, but I have three friends, who in the last six months, have wrecked while dragging on the streets. One was seriously injured. This ain't no video game.

I understand and Im sorry to hear that. But unfortunately in America, no one ever heeds advice. Therefore no coalitions or anti-movements are created untill something happens to that person. ie- would M.A.D.D. have been created if no one lost a child to drunk driving? Probably not even though we know its wrong to d&d. We tend to react , not initiate.

I just wanted to know about the rev limiter, sorry if I opened up a can of worms.
I never really drag race, but if conditions are ok and there isnt any traffic around, I will occasionally open it up through 2 gears. You dont?

wrong thread to b**** abt racing..... its abt hitting the rev limiter which normally comes from racing, go start masr...............mothers against street racing.....
then if you hit the rev limiter by mistake dont come back here now ya hear.....
