AWR headers

Hey guys, I just was looking at the pics of the Tripoint cars for sale (50 grand a piece, go pick you up two :), and they dont seem to be using the AWR header. But I thought they were supposed to be. ?? But check out the strange config of the header (not great pics).

And heres the page with the for sale info:

David, from the menu of stuff on the cars for sale:"[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]High Tech Header/Borla Muffler". Who or what is "High Tech?"

Yeah, good question Gino. I guess if it was an AWR header, they would probably state that? The exhaust piping for cylinder 1 (thats the one on the passenger side, correct?) is routed under the rest of the piping, then ties into the collector. I have never seen anything like that. Maybe Im not seeing the pic correctly, but it sure looks like that is what is happening. Anyone know anyone at Tripoint well enough to call and ask them?

A dude from Tripoint used to be pretty regular on here...But I have not seen him in a while (like 6 months or so)...They always seemed kind of wierd though, and would always make strange claims...For example I remember a thread on the speed touring cars, and the tripoint guys claimed that they were not allowed to run higher than 11:1 static CR...which is not true...but at the time I didn't know that...and also they said they were only making 200 or so whp with a $15K engine...and based on the site that too is most likely not true...I can't remember who was saying what in those threads though, so all that may be way off...I just remember contradictive discussions with someone from Tripoint...

Anyway...Tripoint has been racing a long time...and they have been making their own parts for a long time...AWR is more of a sub-contractor for racing parts from what I understand...And I don't remember who owned the P5 that Roger Foo used to drive, but it had an AWR header on it I think...as well as suspension parts and a radiator...

AWR did most of the ground work development on the Protege for the SWC. The first car was built out of Tony's shop. Oddly enough, it was the last car to start the season too. Most of the intial development was done with some race fans from Mazda and Tony...

Most of the Proteges out there are using the stuff Tony developed, except for Tri-Point apparently.

The team that owned the Protege 5 went under I think. And I heard Foo wasn't happy with the car at all.

The power the Proteges put down is something serious. I don't (think) a Protege could ever pull on a BMW 3 series in real life.

---Edit---

I just read this over and realized I need to go to bed. DAMN NIGHT SHIFT!

I thought Tripoint and AWR were totally different teams. I never thought Tripoint used AWR stuff, even suspension wise.

AWR races an orange car, tripoint has 2 blue cars, one turbo and one NA.
So therefore they are competitors and probably don't share much.

Tripoint is weird, in speaking to them personally they were very careful NOT to divulge tech data. I may have been the one who mentioned the 11:1 CR, however i thought i said that they told me they ran OVER 11.1, not how much. Finally they were supposed to release some suspension parts but they never did to my knowledge.

AWR on the other hand is a good shop, although some of their parts reflect their small shop mentality, Tony though is great customer service wise. They have also been better at making parts available. I don't think AWR did nearly as well as tripoint though in WC.

Ok, my bad akhilleus. I was confused about the relationship between AWR and Tripoint. Thanks for clearing that up.

I know AWR and Tri-Point are different teams.

AWR built two cars. A white one with yellow and grey stripes on it in the first season the Proteges ran. Then built the second car for a different team, the orange one.

Tri-Point is not running a car with a turbo in the SWC. Forced induction is not allowed in the touring class. Tri-Point was running three cars last season and then dropped down to two when one of their drivers left this season. They also developed their Mazda6 since Tri-Point got the big purse from Mazda for their racing program.

All the cars Tri-Point has run are N/A 2.0-liter motors running almost 13.0:1 compression. All the Protege motors are built by Sunbelt racing.

There are a few other teams out there, but I'm not sure if they will come out again next season.

Not when you have to rebuild the motor every month. Anyone know the octane used in touring class?

Actually I think it was closer to two or three a year, but compared to the acuras and bmws it was a high turnover.

I was thinking that since the wc proteges will basically be retired soon both teams might be willing to divulge some info like cam specs, head work, hc, and management. Tony at AWR might be more forthcoming than tripoint.

someone should talk to them.

quality wise the protege motors were not nearly as good as the acuras/bmws. mazda was given exceptions by WC because frankly our motors needed lots of help to make power compared to the other engines run by other manufacturers. C&D had a column about the WC cars. i will find out what issue.

Me too! :D Of course when u look at the BMW and Acura they were already more advanced from the factory. In a way the protege was like an underdog and the fact it did so well says something. Of course its main strong point which gave it an edge was its superior handling. It was unrivaled.
