Thanks DiS, appreciate the info. Unfortunately, I'm the second owner and I couldn't find anything in reference to the radio in the paperwork they passed on to me. Guess I'll suck it up and either pay the dealer or get that aftermarket unit that's caught my eye. Thanks again.

I have the same issue I have a 2003 Mazda Protege, stock stereo unit with CD player. I went to install an iPod connection thus disconnecting the battery. Now the radio is completely dead, and I see absolutely no mention of this in the Owners Manual. Dealership will of course reset the radio...
