Sounds like it might be the AC compressor. On my 04, it makes alot of noise when it's on and I'm crossing my fingers it doesn't fail. While in park, turn the ac on and rev the engine slightly to see if the whirring noise also speeds up. Then with the blower fan still on, just turn the ac off...
