    Valve adjustment

So it's all done and put back together. And the results are...absolutely no difference in the loud valve noise, which I assume means that at least one of them is bent. I guess a bent valve in spec is better than a bent valve out of spec.

    Greetings from Pennsylvania

Before you think about doing a complete rebuild on the brake that the hand brake isn't functioning on, check the set screw on the back of the caliper. It's a hex head. I had the same problem, and a simple adjustment fixed the issue. Mazda says to tighten it all the way, then go back a 1/3 of...

    Odd exhaust noises

I took the entire exhaust system starting just after the exhaust manifold apart, replaced all gaskets, and put it back together. That fixed my issue.

    Valve adjustment

Maxpower, I'm assuming we're calling the cam caps the same thing...The bolts that pull the saddles against the cams, right? Those need to be loosened quite a lot. A lot more than it looked like he did in the Miata write up. I did notice that. I torqued them back down to spec(around 10lb/ft)...

    Valve adjustment

I used the miata one. Everything was exactly the same except the torque and tolerances, obviously. The only minor difference is the cam bolts all the way towards the timing belt are set a little under the timing belt sprocket on our cars, where they were easily accessible on the miata. I used...

    Valve adjustment

Broke it all down today, and I was able to reuse four shims. Ordered the other two that I needed. Overall, that write up was very good.

I'm going to be doing this job when the micrometer I ordered comes in. I'll post here so y'all know how it came out.

    Louisiana Roll Call

I just got my pro5 about a year ago. Married college students bargain hunt, haha. Most of my work at this point is keeping it running. I'd definitely be interested in a BBQ or something. Shoot me a message or something. Also, feel free to ask for help if you have any two person jobs.

    Louisiana Roll Call

I'm in Hammond. I know there used to be a fairly large P5 group in New Orleans, but I think it died out.

    Valve adjustment

That doesn't look all that bad, maxpower. I may try that. I know they are noisy, but this is definitely outside of the realm of normal. Any idea what the likelihood is that the valves have been bent or mushroomed as a result? At this point, I am contemplating pulling the head and doing a...

    Valve adjustment

So I decided to try to eliminate the obnoxious ticking noise emanating from the top of my engine today. After pulling the valve cover and checking clearances on all 16 valves, I found 5 to be out of spec. I had found the culprit. As I'm reading in the service manual, i realize that there are...

    Tick and burning oil

If it helps any, I just thought to add that it ticks on start, during hard acceleration at any speed, and during any minor acceleration changes above 55 mph(i.e. taking foot off the gas, giving it more). It doesn't tick at all, at least not that I can hear, during city driving.

    Tick and burning oil

Would you recommend just pulling the entire head and getting it rebuilt then, if that's the case? It has 127,500 miles on it. The lifter stuff is just baffling me because I've never worked on a car with overhead cams before. I'm kind of a noob when it comes to imports. Thanks a bunch for the...

    Tick and burning oil

Hi, First things first, my P5 has a lifter tick that has been around for a while now and it burns oil on start up. I have seen absolutely no evidence that I'm burning oil while driving. My father is suggesting we pull the head and get it re-machined to alleviate the oil issue(we assume it's...

    Odd exhaust noises

So I got under my car to do a final check before ordering a new cat...for the first time, I had a friend with me so I could listen underneath the car. The sound is not coming from the cat itself but from the area around the fitting from the short pipe coming off the exhaust manifold to the pipe...
