ok, now the od lindicator is flashing steadily. any ideas?

hello all, wondering if anybody can help me with transmission issue. I have a 2002 Protege ES/GT Auto trans 2.0L. Car starts fine,get reverse and 1st gear only. when in drive, trans stays in 1st gear and won't shift. Any ideas? Thx, Paul
