I guess I'm wondering if this mesh is a separate piece that can be easily removed or does it have to be cut out. I have a CAI and I'm too lazy to dismantle that in the cold weather :) I really don't remember seeing it, I've been thinking maybe I bought the car like that.

synthetic is awesome. i use mobil 1 and changed my last one at 9,000mi with a filter only change at 2,700 mi. oil looked fine.

after installing my kartboy ss, i can say that second takes a bit of finesse with the clutch and a bit of force with the stick - the other gears are fine. i'm sure we've all got a bit of that problem unless you really put some stank on the lever, but i'm not willing to break/bend forks, or gears.

the computer controls the cold idle to warm the engine up to prevent damage. 2300 is normal and when the engine warms up it should drop. the idle range is located under your hood on the mazda sticker. our 3rd gens run 700-800 when warm.

it can occur for a number of reasons. it may be what they call "knock" as well. Usually valve tick is caused by the type of oil being used - thinner oil makes them noisy. Our cars can use 5w-30 synthetic without issue. The valve springs could be worn. The valve lash (distance of opening)...

did you change the cams or valve springs?

the ticking sound? sounds like a valve tick. also is it cold in your area? Can you provide any details on changed the engine? was it a rebuilt one or a used one with any mods added? my friend changed his cams for more aggressive ones and when he did that he had the same noise.
