My 94 is flashing the HOLD light. It shifts harshly in 1-2 as well. However, since you didn't mention the HOLD light was flashing, it's probably a pretty simple fix. I, unfortunately, probably need a new transmission. :(

My 1994 looked about the same inside, I paid $300 for it too. It needs new brakes and rotors in front, a power steering pump, and the hold light flashes. The outside is dented here and here, but no rust.
