Can some please just let me know how to start a thread. It's driving me nuts.

I just bought a protege about a month ago and I get on average about 32+ miles to the gallon but I only drive interstate to and from work. I do have a question for anyone though. I can't figure out how to get a thread going. Can someone tell me how? Thanks.
