2015 CX-5 GT With Blown Head Gasket...Advice Needed

Yeah, the few estimates I could shake out of some mechanics were in the range of $2-3k...one quoted $7k!!! But I think he didn't want the job and argued Subarus are cheaper to do head gaskets on...which I've always heard the exact opposite.

Thanks again for all of the replies. After consulting with a few shops and looking at what you all have said, it sounds like this is more of a wait-and-see situation. One shop said that if it's losing that little coolant then they may find nothing during the diagnostic. And he echoed what...

@sm1ke Wow, interesting to hear. How long have you had this issue of losing coolant?

@edmaz Thanks for the response. I'm assuming a head gasket job is going to be $3k+ with the rates shops are charging and most wouldn't even give me a ballpark which is frustrating. One dealer quoted me about $2500 bare minimum. I'm going to take the advice of everybody and monitor usage. I've...

What's over half a quart? The oil burning? No, it has consistently burned 1/2 qt for the majority of its life. Reservoir is clean. When I did a block test I took the opportunity to examine the coolant I had to remove and no surface sheen. Reservoir has no signs of oil/film residue.

It's always burned about 1/2 qt of oil every 5k miles. This started at maybe 30k and has held constant. I've checked the water pump. I have a bit of the classic "weeping" residue from the weep hole but no crusting or anything. I've yet to FULLY examine the engine block but from the places I can...

2015 CX-5 GT With Blown Head Gasket...Advice Needed

In the last 6 months (about 6k miles) I’ve added 24 ounces roughly (4 oz for every 1k miles). It’s obviously leaking somewhere and it’s not external.

@7eregrine Thanks. Yeah, in my short time under the hood of mine doing simple DIY stuff it's amazing how simple they are. Comparatively under the hood of my Tacoma...I don't know which way is up. Just a mess of wires and hoses. Obviously not an apple-to-apples comparison but getting around the...

Well there is a leak. Not sure what you mean. Yeah, most of it is more than likely being burnt but a leak is a leak.

Ok, interesting responses. I'm fairly green when it comes to automotive issues. I do my own oil changes, brakes, etc. But this stuff goes beyond my purview. My assumption is that the gasket can go at any moment, dump the coolant and overheat the engine which is why I'm freaking out a bit. But...

I thought I'd also ask if a leak down test is considered the gold standard for confirming a head gasket leak? I just don't want to have the mechanic tear down the engine only to find that I have a cracked head or a pinhole leak in the casting...just something more insidious. I guess they could...

2015 CX-5 GT With Blown Head Gasket...Advice Needed

2015 CX5 GT with 100k miles. Long story short I've been chasing a SLOWLY disappearing coolant issue for a few months. Back in September I decided to start changing my own oil and noticed the coolant reservoir was completely empty. Since then I've been monitoring it. A sniffer test proved to be...

Reason #1 and #2 why it's better to change your own oil Vs a dealer

My friend swears by the Fumoto valve but I've been trying to convince myself of a reason to use it. Having the valve would make it easy to drain obviously. Both methods involve some type of mess. The valve probably provides a tidier stream of oil? I don't know. I think if I put more miles on my...

Reason #1 and #2 why it's better to change your own oil Vs a dealer

Thought I’d chime in since this topic is something I’ve been dealing with lately. I used to do my own oil changes years ago on my cars but stopped once I just got too busy and lost the desire (and the space) to do it. I had been taking our 2015 CX5 to Southtowne Mazda here in Salt Lake for...
