2016~2023 Mazda navigation SD card

Hello!!
One question, saw some OEM sd navigation card on eBay. Is it that simple? Put the sd card in the slot and it work?
Just be careful who you are buying from. My brother bought an alleged "OEM SD Nav Card" for his Mazda6 on ebay which did not work. He bought a second from another seller which worked fine. I don't believe he ever got his money back from the first seller.

How do you update your SD with new data? Is it free? Does Mazda inform you if there is an update?

It's pretty easy (and free for 1st 3 years). Follow link above.

You inspired me to update mine for the first time in 2 years.

The app downloaded very quickly. The tool is pretty easy -- do not need to read directions, just follow the steps on screen. Took about 15 minutes to update the SD card. No errors on the CX9 screen once the card was reinstalled.

Is it possible to make a backup/copy of the SD card before inserting it into the vehicle?

If you are backing up a new or uninserted SD card to the Nav slot, I believe you can’t back it up using Mazda toolbox on the computer. The card has to be inserted first and car driven for few kms in order for the card to lock in with the vehicle. After which you can only back it up...the toolbox will look for the VIN of the car and if there’s no VIN it won’t allow the back up. Once the SD card has locked in the the car, you can’t use it in another vehicle unfortunately.

I checked and mazda update toolbox shows I am currently updated to most current version but it shows version November 2020 as the last update performed.

My story: I got an ebay card and installed Mazda update toolbox and it updated my card last month to the November 2020 update on 2/18/2021. I just tried to update it to version February 2021 but it shows no new updates available.

I went to inspect some of the SD card files and found one interesting one that shows file name BDGF66EZ1 (pic attached) which I come to find out is for a Mazda 3.

My main concern is that the navi screen in my CX9 is stretched/not the correct layout and made for the Mazda 3's 8.8" screen ike the SD card shows. This is our first Mazda ever so even tho everything looks fine to us, may very well be not correct.

My plan is to post some navi screen pics from my car tomorrow morning, hopefully someone can chime in and confirm they do look normal.

Thanks!

Wow, haven't looked at an INI file in a while!

Do we have model numbers for the CX-9 specific navi cards? And what other CX models are they compatible with?

Ok took some pics with my navi turned on. So my card files on PC show BDGF66EZ1 (Mazda 3) but I bought the TD card made for cx9s.

Can anyone confirm their cx9 navigation screen look similar as far as screen orientation and placement of icons etc? Not sure if its correct, looks ok to me but then again I've never owned a Mazda or CX9. Thanks so much.

I'm afraid I'm no good to you, I have the older 8" screen. I would think that the SD card only contains map data, not the actual navigation software itself. But who knows, maybe it does.

As an aside, I just got off the phone with a Mazda dealership. It turns out my navi SD card that was causing my infotainment to reboot in extremely cold weather is covered under warranty. So the replacement card is waiting for me at the dealer. I'm curious to see what the model number is and if it has newer map data (mine is outdated, although of hand I can't remember how out dated).

That's a great point! Probably just map data and the unit itself has the software...makes sense. Appreciate the reply.

Good luck with your new card and cool it's covered under warranty. I bet it has the newer map data as well...a bonus for you 👍

I signed up for email notifications with Mazda Update Toolbox and just got an email 5 minutes ago about an update available now "February 2021". Going to try tomorrow morning and see what happens.

Just an update. So I tried again this morning and mazda update toolbox said my card is up to date. I received my ebay card, installed the toolbox, and installed the update that was available on exactly 2/18/21. The version says November 2020 per screen shot attached.

I heard about an update available and even received an email from toolbox that read "as of February 2021 an update is available". This had me thinking my file should say "version February 2021" not "version November 2020" but I guess I read it wrong and maybe November 2020 version is the latest but it was released as of February 2021.

My cx5 model year 2021.5 looks the same as yours. But i have ghosting shadows today for first time.

I have a 2020 CX-9 GT, purchased new with GPS. The card was activated by the dealer in Feb 2020 when we picked it up. I thought we get 3 full years of available map updates, which I interpret to mean I could update my maps twice a year during all 3 years if I wished. No limit to the number of updates.

We've had the car just over two years and I successfully updated the card to the March 2022 map file. This is the 3rd time I did an update. Mazda Toolbox now says "Your free map period has expired".

Are we limited to only 3 map updates during the 3 year period? If I would have known this I would have waited until I was near the end of the 3 year period to update.
