Max Wheel offset with 20" wheels?

I am planning to spruce up my 2017 Signature with some new, lightweight 20" wheels (stock OEM wheels are rock heavy) and I wonder what is the max offset I can do on the CX-9.

Stock wheels are 45 mm. I wonder if I can go with 30 mm without the wheels/tires sticking or rubbing? Ideally, I am looking for a "flush" look with the fender.
Wheels will be 20 x 9 or 20 x 9.5.
I can also get 20 x 8.5, but they will be 40 mm offset, which won't give me much different look than the stock setup.

I know some people here are running spacers to get that wider stance with stock wheels but i am not sure what's the max offset i can really use without creating clearance issues.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

For reference, I have 20x9.5 +25 with 255/50/20 and there is still wiggle room for "flushness". Also when you shop for wheels, make sure they have proper load ratings for suv.

Yeah, I think the stock 20" wheels are close to 40 lb and you can get 22" wheels that are closer to 30lb and I bet you could get 20" wheels that are like 28 lb. This actually is a really nice idea. Lower the weight but space out a bit. Should look great and maybe will improve ride and MPG.

Based on this setup, I think 9.5" width with a +20 offset would be perfect for you @danmm7.

Here's a thread where someone used spacers with the OEM wheels to get a flush stance. 25mm up front and 32mm in the rear, which is essentially the same as running 8.5" +20 up front and 8.5" +13 in the rear.
