How to tell if power steering fluid is clean?

For my 2006 mazda3, from the ps resevoir all I can see is darkish fluid. It looks like the resevoir isn't a clear see through plastic, it’s like a wierd dark yellow color so it’s hard to see the coolant properly.

Any ideas on what color the fluid should be or how I can check if it’s 'good'?

I assume turkey baster or something? Any ideas?

thx

The power steering system doesn't really abuse the fluid like the transmission does.

Honestly, I have never had a pump ever go bad due to PS fluid. Never heard of anyone personally have a PS pump go bad for any reason on any car, actually.

But if you want, take a turkey baster, pull out as much fluid as you can from the reservoir and top it off with new stuff. Do this for several drive cycles and you will have freshened it enough.

Being a 2006, probably wouldn't hurt.

I had to buy a hand pump for my 2008 MX5 power steering reservoir fluid change. A turkey baster wasn't long enough. Either way, just do it. It doesn't take long and it should prevent premature failure.
