Most homeowners will have scrap lumber of some sort laying around. Folks who live in an apartment, or similar, may not.
But they have hockey pucks and a jack? I'm just saying that if you bought yourself a jack, go thru the extra effort to get the right attachment to use it safely. I've done some questionable auto repairs and would never think to put a hockey puck or some unfamiliar material between the jack and the car. Most homeowners will have scrap lumber of some sort laying around. Agreed. I always use a piece of 2X4 or 2X8 to space between the jack and the jack point, mainly want to protect the metal and / or paint of the jack point. Like DwightFrye, one of these days I'll upgrade it to a thick rubber jack pad for the jack cradle. Why do people use hockey pucks? Are they more accessible than a piece of 2x4? I never had a problem with wood when I needed a spacer, plus it's soft enough that the jack bites into it and doesn't allow it to slip. A hard slippery puck seems like a bad idea...
Yes, use the "odd looking jack point extension". I've done this many times and it worked perfectly. I used a scrap piece of 2x4 on the floor jack cradle in the past and it works fine. I now have a thick rubber jack pad for the jack cradle but the 2x4 will be fine.

This is the jack pad that I use. It works good for my jack. For the front jack point I put a hockey puck on top of it.

So this is the 2018 cx-5?A hockey puck fits perfectly on the front jack point, it clears the plastic undercover and goes right on the dimpled strengthened metal. The rear I put the jack under the protruding metal thing that is bolted to the differential.

Yes, 2018. I now use the part that hangs down on the diff. It is easier to access and plenty strong. So this is the 2018 cx-5?
Also what about the rear? Some said the rear diff extension part that hangs down and others say between the two bolt holes?
When you use those rubber pads for the stands, supposedly ONLY the top of the jack head rubber pads contact the vehicle's underbody w/o the RAIL contacting the bottom of the groove!
It is very important that the RAIL DOES NOT CARRY THE LOAD!
It is stated on the 2nd gen of the owners manual page 7-8 and it should apply to all vehicles with this type of STAMPED JACKING POINTS. Exception is if they are reinforced like in my 08 civic.
So your saying the pinch weld took all/most of the weight?I made pictures that shows that the pads only get the weight from the pinch welds.
