Mazda 6 Brake upgrade

15 inch? The stock Protege wheels are 16's, and the Mz6 brakes barely fit under those. Not sure about 15's. The MSP brakes should fit though, they're only about half inch bigger in diameter than the protege brakes.

Hi.. Question.

I have a P5 and using 15" winter rims on the front. I'm interested in going with bigger front brakes only.

Will the Mazda6 front brakes clear the 15" rims?.. Which year?

Many thanks,

Nope. 16" is the minimum size for MZ6 brakes

And here's a pic for reference. Like i said, they fit 15's just fine.
This is a OEM 626 15in wheel for reference.

Yeah you guys are right. Looks like the early MZ6 brakes were actually a lot smaller. Not worth the upgrade IMO, but if you absolutely have to run 15's, you can do that.

Front: (Height | Width | Weight)
2006-09 Mazda6 (v6) : 298mm | 25mm | 19lbs
2003-05 Mazda6 (v6) : 282mm | 25mm | 14.8lbs
2003-03.5 Mazda MSP: 273mm | 24mm | 13.5lbs
2002-03 Mazda Pro5 : 257mm | 24mm | 12lbs

Rear: (Height | Width | Weight)
2006-09 Mazda6 (v6) : 280mm | 10mm | 9.3lbs

There still over a 1/2 inch larger then stock Protege brakes, at about the same replacement costs. And cheaper and easier to source then the smaller MSP brakes. If your wanting to run 15's, they would be a perfect upgrade.

The brakes on my 6 in the photo are actually on my 97 626 now, along with some 98+ 626 rear's. The Mazda6 now has Mazdaspeed6 brakes all around. Had to fill in those 18's. :)

lol I love you for this right now <3

Glad to see this thread is still kicking. I moved my MZ6 fronts to my MSP a while back, going to move the rears today.

Originally when we started this discussion I was putting them on my P5, which as you know has smaller brakes in the rear when compared to the MSP. I'm moving them to the MSP mostly because a. My wagon project is no more, b. both of my MSP rear calipers are seized and c. the cost of new MSP rears is silly, especially when I have new rotors/pads/calipers sitting there.

I'm not 100% but I also recall the MZ6 calipers have better performance pad selections. With the MSP, because the fronts are 626 calipers and the rears are FD calipers, you're left with little performance pass options for the front. At least this way I should be able to match compounds front/rear.

Gotcha. Was just wondering. I have a full set of MSP brakes and was planning to do a MZ6 front upgrade in the future but didn't have any other plans for the rear

I'm with you, I'd keep the MSP rears if I didn't already have the MZ6 rears. Since the rears use FD RX7 pads, there is a much better selection for the rear than the MSP fronts. At least now it will balance out for you :)

Hey fellow protege nerds!

Got a question. I have read through the thread and haven't seen anything relating to the dreaded protege ebrake seal leaks. I just noticed over the weekend that my rear calipers are leaking fluid from the ebrake input shaft. This is the third set is about two years that the seals have failed on.

So I was wondering if the 626 or mazda 6 calipers has a better design that would not end up leaking after a few months or years.

Thanks a ton!

I had that happen to me. I replaced the Ebrake seal when I rebuilt the calipers So far so good going on a year
