Where Is Mazda Headed Next?

The CX-5 caters to a different set of buyers hence which is why the 2L engine is offered in that car as the base engine.

The Mazda 6 base engine in North America is the 2.5, and it will be getting the 2.5T as its upgraded motor for 2018. Different type of buyers wanting more Power.

But in all honesty, the CX-5 needs the added turbo grunt more so then the adeuqately powered Mazda 6.

I get that. Just thinking that the vehicles that sell more should get it first rather than the 6

I totally agree, but how many people do you see whining about the lack of power in the 6 VS. The CX-5? I guess it makes sense in this cases but again the CX-5 is the volume seller here (I start to see more and more on the road now) and it needs the extra power more so than the 6.

As much as I'd like to see this come to the cx5 in addition to diesel..i see many more ppl whining about real world fe (more so in17s with their overactive throttle response) than i do power..that and lets face it the 6 really needs the help now..and if they don't bring awd along with it Im calling them to tell them they're idiots.

Quite a few on the CX-5

The 6 needs help in a few areas such as cabin noise, AA/ACP

If the CX-5 came with a turbo option, I would've had the GT instead of the GS. I'd pay more for turbo zoom zoom. :D
But I won't pay more for fibreoptic lights, leather seats and rear heated seats, when I find the suede more comfortable, and I don't sit in the rear.

On throttle response and "overactive throttle" in the '17. I like having a throttle that acts when called upon, and don't care nearly as much if my FE suffers a point or two because of it. But I'm probably in the minority on this point.

I thought that was kind of funny about the throttle response as the CX-5 ‘17 is a bit touchy. And Dave Coleman was going on about how linear it is compared to others. So I like responsiveness but sometimes its tricky to get a little vs a lot of response.

I think that change caused a bigger real world hit to 2017 fe than anything imo. I understand why they did it (i think i feel those 3 ponies) but Im just not a fan of it

I agree the 6 needs more help now than the CX-5 does. However, I do think they missed a golden opportunity to add the 2.5T to the CX-5 with the 2017 refresh. I guess the thought the 2.2D was right around the corner.

I also agree about AWD. I have a feeling we're probably not getting AWD in the new 6, because they're probably looking at the Accord and Camry as class benchmarks and thinking since they don't have AWD, then the 6 doesn't need it either. Hopefully that's not what they're thinking, because I don't think you can claw market share back from the Accord and Camry by offering a new 6 that just has comparable features. There has to be something the 6 has that the others don't, besides styling. AWD is a good starting point because there aren't many AWD options left in this vehicle class. Just the Legacy and Fusion I think.

For 2018 CX5 with cylinder deactivation >> diesel CX5 if you are not going to use the torque for towing or driving through mountains.
mpg difference will be minimal and no one would recoup the price difference imo.

I think they'll benchmark the 6 against Audi/BMW/Mercedes etc, since they're trying to go premium. Just about all of them are RWD or AWD... excluding Acura.

If the take rate on the V6 for the Accord and Camry is already low, makes no sense for Mazda to go after those buyers considering the 6's current small volume.

From the reviews I have read, the 2 major gripes are:

  • Needs more power
  • Better infotainment system

Now if the 2.5T was dropped into the CX-5, it pretty much makes the vehicle pretty much a complete SUV/CUV leaving the infotainment matter

This!!!!

Maybe for 2018 they might introduce cylinder deactivation 2.5 NA followed a little later with the 2.5T
