If you've ever owned a real Volk, Work, etc.. wheel then you would be able to see the difference in the lip (polish versus anodized or machined) and the paint (much thicker). For the 2 / 3 piece wheels, you're able to fully customize the spoke and lip design, also.
So true. You don't pay for just a name, but quality. I know my WORK wheels are made of high grade material and the construction. Infact I had first hand experience when I was forced over and into a curb. I hit it pretty hard and scraped it to hell, but nothing else. It's still a usable wheel and I repaired it, but they use such a unique satin paint for the bronze I could not match. Ended up buying another.
