Official Thread: 2008 Geneva Auto Show

When Ford introduced the Iosis X Concept back in 2006, it proved that the Blue Oval's European Kinetic design language could transfer over to a CUV remarkably well. And when the Kuga Concept made its debut in Frankfurt, it was obvious that much of what made the Iosis X such an eye-catcher would come to the production model. It's done just that and Ford will be pulling the wraps off its first CUV in Europe next month in Geneva.

That Kuga looks like a Mazda CX-5 and a Volvo SUV did very very dirty things and an offspring popped out. Looks much better than an Escape (and 6MT, damn Europeans)

General Motors has already officially announced that Saab will have the world premiere of an entirely new concept car at the Geneva Motor Show which shows a further step in its continuing product range extension. Though GM hasn’t released any specific details on the concept, we have been informed that it will be the 9-1X. Today, Saab attempted to enlighten us furthermore by uploading a teaser image of the concept on its official site. Unfortunately, the blacked out image doesn’t allow us to make any assumptions at all on the concept’s appearance. -Continued The 9-1X previews Saab’s forthcoming premium compact hatch that will compete against the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and Volvo C30 models. It will be based on the Opel Astra architecture, with engine options including a 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol units.

^^ Yeah, they are lookalikes all of them. And on top the S-MAX is an award winner. Some actually said it would come to the US, purely rumors. THAT one is a good Mazda5 contender

Germany s largest car magazine AutoBild , along with its 23 sister publications in Europeand a jury of leading car specialists have given the prized Auto 1 of Europe award to the Ford S-MAX. In addition to this overall victory, the dynamic crossover S-MAX with its unmistakable kinetic design styling also took the individual trophy for the minivan category in the Auto 1 awards. These awards are the latest in a long list of accolades for the Ford S-MAX, already crowned Car of the Year 2007. Ford S-MAX has now taken over fifteen national or individual magazine awards, including Autobild magazines Design Award 2006. In the final round the Ford S-MAX prevailed over well-known competitors like BMW X5, Mercedes CL, Opel Corsa, Volvo C30 and VW Eos.

Press Release

The Alfa GT model offers an original style, rich in exciting features and performances. It represents an innovative conception of sporty style, into which comfort and elegance also converge. The best example of this stylistic equilibrium is the model on display in the Geneva showroom: the Special Blackline III range, fitted with the powerful 1.9 JTDM with 170 CV and the front self-locking Torsen (called Q2) system.
The greatest change in this new Alfa GT model is the adoption of a 1.9 JTDM propulsion, which supplies a maximum power of 170 CV (125 kW) at 3.750 rpm and a maximum torque coupling of 330 Nm (33,6 Kgm) at 2.000 rpm, which allows a top speed of 100 km/h in 8,2 seconds. A powerful and progressive engine, which will be available as of next June, and can also be fitted with a anti-particulate filter (DPF).
It's worth noting, that placed on the tunnel is a Sport button, with which you can vary the mapping of the accelerator pedal. You can chose between a more touristy mapping or a sportier one: the latter improves the car's response and renders the drive more exciting.

So much power, therefore, is confirmed by the external design which stands out due to the compact aggressive styling. The car is embellished with aesthetic touches like the 18 alloy wheels, the double chromed exhaust, and the satined effect for mirrors, grills and whiskers. Even in the interior the Alfa GT Serie Speciale Blackline III reveals a sporty charisma, as shown by the sporty pedals in aluminium and the serigraphed kick-panel. Furthermore, the black tones characterize the black leather seats with a central perforated insert and Alfa Romeo logo on the headrest, as well as the steering wheel and display panel in leather.

In addition, the model on display is differentiated by the front self-locking Torsen (called Q2) system, which has all the merits of front-wheel traction, such as heightening the driving ease and pleasure and guaranteeing the advantages typical of an integrated traction. In detail, the system is mated to JTDM with 170 CV, so benefiting of the excellent weight/power ratio, thanks to the use of Common Rail technology. The benefit is also due to the predominant role that diesel motorizations have taken on in the field of sport engines. The Q2 system combines perfectly the torque specifications and power of the 1.9 JTDM increasing yet further the already excellent performance levels of a vehicle with a normal differential.

This is how it works. The Q2 system is based on a limited slip differential, the mechanical Torsen type. In particular, this differential has the job of permanently distributing torque between the front wheels in a dynamic manner, depending on the driving conditions and road surface. Mated to the exclusive front wishbone suspension, the system allows a particularly efficient tuning of the vehicle.

Press Release

The new Audi A4 Avant:
Driving in a new dimension

Attractive design, spacious and well thought-out luggage space
Sporty technology layout and dynamic driving performance
New generation of engines with higher performance and lower fuel consumption

Dynamic, elegant, and emotional; with the A4 sedan, Audi has already advanced into a new dimension. In a few weeks, the A4 Avant will follow: The most successful premium station wagon of its class offers, along with excellent drivability and uncompromising quality, a higher utility value for sports and recreation. This vehicle combines elegance and intelligent functionality.

The Audi A4 Avant is extending its lead. Based on the same technology layout as the sedan, the newly developed five-link front axle has been shifted farther forward. This ensures that the axle loads are perfectly distributed, thereby guaranteeing the highest precision and agility when it comes to handling. The Avant therefore also offers a new and fascinating driving experience similar to the one that led media experts to pronounce the sedan the best automobile in the midsize range.

Audi is launching the A4 Avant with five engine types to begin with: two gasoline engines and three diesel engines. These engines offer superior performance while reducing fuel consumption by more than 14 percent compared to the previous model proof of Audis successful efficiency strategy.

Audis high technological competence is also expressed in the broadly diversified range of powertrains and in its numerous sport and comfort technologies many of which originate directly from the premium class.

Attractive station wagons called Avant: the design

The design of the new Audi A4 Avant is as exciting and dynamic as one would expect from a brand as design-oriented as Audi. The headlights are staged like a technological work of art. The Avant comes with daytime running lights as a standard feature; the xenon plus headlights consist of 14 white light-emitting diodes.

Compared to the forerunner model, the proportions have been reconfigured in a new and even sportier design. The front overhang has been shortened, and the engine hood and the wheel base have gained considerably in length. The flat D-posts lend the Audi A4 Avant a dynamic, coupe-like silhouette, while the rear design emphasizes its width with powerful, horizontal lines. The new A4 Avant measures 4.70 meters (15.42 feet) in length, almost 12 centimeters (4.72 inches) longer than its forerunner model. Its body is considerably more rigid and safer in build than its predecessor, yet is around 10 percent lighter at the same time.

With up to 1,430 liters in volume (50.50 cubic feet), the latest addition to the Audi family has the largest luggage capacity in its competitive field; in its basic configuration it holds 490 liters (129 gallons). The 60/40 split-fold rear seats also come with the option of a load-through hatch with separate ski and snowboard bag. The A4 Avants trunk is lined with fine carpet and features intelligent details as standard such as a reversible cargo floor and a convenient cargo cover that retracts at a touch. Audi also offers luxury features such as an electro-mechanical drive for the rear tailgate or tie-down eyelets for securing luggage.

Light and spacious: the interior

The ambience inside the new A4 Avant is light and spacious. The interior reflects Audis strengths the highest quality of workmanship, sophisticated looks, and logical, intuitive operation. The cockpit is driver-oriented; it borrows many features from the larger A8. Thanks to the new electro-mechanical parking brake, the manual parking brake was no longer necessary.

Even the standard climate control system has been completely redesigned. It supplies ten percent more cooling capacity, yet operates more efficiently than the previous system, thus saving about 0.2 liters of fuel per 100 km.

When it comes to safety, Audi has raised the bar, for example, with its combination of adaptive airbags, belt tensioners with variable belt force limiters and seat position sensors on the front seats. With this system, the force of the airbag deployment and belt tension level are selectively controlled depending on the seat position and the accident severity. In case of a rear-end collision, the backs of the front seats and the head rests support the upper body. This system is called Audi backguard and has received special praise during independent tests.

The engines: more performance, less fuel consumption

The new Audi A4 Avant will be launched on the market with two powerful gasoline engines and two diesel engines, thus covering a range of 105 kW (143 hp) to 195 kW (265 hp). The 2.0 TDI generating 125 kW (170 hp) will be added later to round out the range. All the engines have FSI and TDI direct fuel injection technology and the three four-cylinder engines reach high torques thanks to turbocharger technology. On average, the engine performance in this model series has increased by almost eight percent. At the same time, fuel consumption in the gasoline engines has dropped by almost 12 percent, and the TDI engines by almost nine percent.

The new 3.2 FSI is the most powerful engine that comes with the new A4 Avant. It has an output of 195 kW (265 hp) and reaches 330 Nm (243.40 lb-ft) of torque between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm. Enhancements to the V6 include considerably lower inner friction and a valve actuation system called the Audi Valvelift System, which varies the stroke of the intake valves.

The 3.2 FSI delivers sport-driven performance in any situation. It powers the A4 Avant from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 6.4 seconds and on up to a top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). At the same time, fuel consumption has dropped by 1.5 liters (0.40 gallons) compared to its predecessor.

The 1.8 TFSI, too, is a highly efficient engine. The compact and light four-cylinder unit has an output of 118 kW (160 hp) and reaches 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. Direct gasoline injection and turbocharging create the ideal combination in this model. The 1.8 liter engine responds spontaneously and provides a highly refined driving experience. It powers the car from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.9 seconds and on up to a top speed of 218 km/h (135.46 mph).

The 3.0 TDI engine in the Audi A4 Avant comes across as a widely new engine, particularly when it comes to the fuel injection system and the turbo. This three liter diesel unit, which is firmly coupled to the manual transmission, has an output of 176 kW (240 hp) and reaches a torque of 500 Nm (368.78 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. Its performance figures from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 6.3 seconds, a top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph) demonstrate this engines dynamic character.

The 2.0 TDI has a new common rail fuel injection system that guarantees refined running; other innovations include the turbo and the piston geometry. Audi offers the two liter diesel engine in two versions: one developing 105 kW (143 hp) and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque and the other generating 125 kW (170 hp) and 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque. Both ensure powerful propulsion the basic TDI accelerates the A4 Avant to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 9.7 seconds and facilitates a top speed of 208 km/h (129.25 mph). The more powerful of the two accelerates the Avant to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.6 seconds and on up to a top speed of 222 km/h (139.19 mph).

When it comes to power transmissions, customers can choose from a broad range of high-tech components. Six-speed manual and tiptronic transmissions (optional for the 3.2 FSI) transfer the engines torque. For the 1.8 TFSI unit and the 2.0 TDI engine generating 105 kW (143 hp), the continuously variable multitronic transmission is also an option.

The 3.2 FSI and the 3.0 TDI come equipped with quattro permanent all-wheel drive as a standard feature. It distributes the forces under normal driving conditions at a ratio of 40 : 60 between the front and rear axle a configuration that perfectly harmonizes the overall dynamic character of the new A4 Avant. If needed, the Torsen differential transfers the majority of the torque to the axle with the better traction.

In the driveline of the new A4 Avant, the differential has moved directly behind the engine. It has switched places with the clutch or the torque converter.
It was therefore possible to move the front axle 154 millimeters (6.06 inches) forward. This solution provides for a longer wheel base and for the perfect distribution of the axle loads, thus improving both handling and ride comfort equally.

Redesigned from top to bottom: the dynamic suspension

The dynamic suspension of the new Audi A4 was redesigned from top to bottom. The pivot bearing and the five links of the front axle are also made of aluminum, just like the beam, which makes the front end of the body more rigid. The steering box is located far to the front and deep down to enable the steering impulse to go directly to the wheels via the tie-rods. The highly efficient servo pump in the sensitive rack-and-pinion steering improves fuel consumption by about 0.1 liter/100 km.

In the rear axle, Audi applied the track-controlled trapezoidal link principle from the larger A6 and A8 series. The suspension is made largely of aluminum; the separate layout of the springs and shock absorbers guarantees sensitive responsiveness. The new A4 Avant will roll off the production line on 16 inch and 17 inch alloy wheels, behind which are located powerful brakes. The electronic stabilization program (ESP) can be partially switched off when driving under 70 km/h (43.50 mph).

A package of innovative technology makes the driving experience even more dynamic and exciting. The optional Audi drive select control system accesses various technology components, depending on which upgrade the customer has selected. In the basic version, it influences the engines gas intake, the tiptronic shifting points, the multitronic and the power steering as well as the steering angle of the steering wheel. By pressing a button, the driver determines whether these components should work in a comfortable, average or sporty mode. If the car is equipped with the MMI operating system, a fourth, individually programmable mode is available.

Audi drive select requires at least one of the following two high-end components. One is an adaptive controller for the shock absorbers which is connected to a sports suspension and lowers the body by about 20 millimeters (0.79 inches).

The second component is the Audi dynamic steering that operates with a superposition gear. It varies the steering ratio continuously by almost 100 percent depending on the speed driven. In the limit range, it stabilizes the new A4 Avant thanks to its lightning-fast steering interventions. The system is also extremely useful when understeering occurs.

Even greater supremacy: assistance systems

Audi equips the new Avant, upon request, with a complete range of high-tech systems that make driving an even more supreme and relaxed experience. These include the Audi parking system (a parking aid; standard for the A4 Avant Ambiente), Audi lane assist (the lane departure warning system) and Audi side assist (which warns of hazards when changing lane). Adaptive cruise control maintains the distance to the vehicle in front.

Even when it comes to multimedia, the Audi A4 Avant sets new standards. The Audi Music Interface (AMI) allows iPods to be connected. The navigation systems with MMI Basic plus or with DVD including MMI are also further upgrade options. They permit the integration of cell phones as Bluetooth car phones and are combined with the competition-beating MMI operating system. The top of the line when it comes to hi-fi enjoyment is the cars sound system from the leading Danish company Bang & Olufsen: A powerful 505 watt, ten-channel amplifier controls 14 speakers.

The new Audi A4 Avant will roll off the production line in the Attraction, Ambition, and Ambiente equipment lines. The dynamic S line offers the options of an exterior package and a sports package. The broad range of options includes luxury-class features such as air-conditioned comfort seats, the triple-zone climate control system, the advanced key which allows keyless access to the vehicle and vehicle start-up at the press of a button, and the dynamic cornering light system known as adaptive light. The large panoramic glass sunroof lights up the elegant interior. A new headlight assistant will be an additional feature in the future.

The A4 Avant will be available for sale in the spring in Germany and other European markets. The basic price of the Audi A4 Avant 1.8 TFSI Attraction model with an output of 88 kW (120 hp) will be 27,550 and it will be available in the fall.

2009 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

12750_DCKLAZIYYEEQL.jpg

Think Rolls-Royce, think chauffeur-driven. It's an image the company has been trying to play down for decades; to win over new buyers who will become brand enthusiasts, loving their Roller for its dynamic appeal rather than its rear legroom. The Phantom Coup - to be unveiled at next month's Geneva Motor Show in production trim - is the model that might finally do just that.

Bosses at the U.K.-based, BMW-owned, firm believe this is the most driver-orientated model in the Phantom range. They're trumpeting its subtle change in character while still playing up RR's traditional strengths of luxury, comfort, design and craftsmanship. They're also confident they've created the world's foremost transcontinental tourer.

Chief designer Ian Cameron explained: "Rolls-Royce has always been about pace, performance and style. For the Coup we gave the quintessential design a dynamic twist. This adds a sense of drama to the outstanding engineering and drivability that are fundamentals of Rolls-Royce cars."
The two-door four-seater is based on the 101EX concept, first shown at the Geneva expo in 2006. The Coup is 9.8 inches shorter than the Phantom sedan, but like the other members of the family, it features rear-hinged doors. Crucially, they aid the overall stiffness of the body as they allow for an uninterrupted A-pillar. The result is the most torsionally rigid Rolls-Royce ever. A brushed steel finish to the A-pillar and bonnet, as seen for the first time on earlier 100EX prototype, is also on the Coup.
Built around a lightweight aluminum chassis, at the heart of the Coup is the same 6.75-liter V-12 that's in the Phantom. It produces 453 hp, with the 0-60 mph sprint completed in 5.6 seconds. That's the same as the Drophead Coup - the convertible version of the car - though a 25 percent increase in fuel tank capacity over that model has boosted the driving range.

Cameron added: "With this car we wanted to emphasise the performance potential of the V-12 engine and the effortless experience that it delivers. Whilst never overtly sporty, Rolls-Royce is a brand that has always offered owners a powerful and refined drive combined with, as Sir Henry Royce described it, a bit of fizz."

At the rear a split tail compartment opens in two parts, giving easy access to 13.9 cubic feet of luggage space. The lower tailgate can be moved to create a seating platform for two adults - the so-called "picnic boot."
Production will begin at Rolls' U.K. plant in Goodwood, Surrey in June. Prices have yet to be announced, but the company has confirmed the Coup will sit between the Phantom at $340,000 and the Phantom Drophead Coup at $407,000.

Rolls-Royce's chairman and chief executive Ian Robertson said: "This new model represents an important milestone in the company's history. It completes the Phantom family and judging by the customer reaction to 101EX, we are confident of its success. Our challenge lies in meeting the exceptional levels of customer demand for the Phantom range and in preparing Goodwood to meet the needs of future new cars."

Rolls-Royce sold 1,010 cars in 2007, up 25 percent on the year before, and expects similar numbers this year. The factory is currently in the middle of an expansion, to cope with production of the yet-to-be-revealed smaller sedan.

BMW X5 2.0-liter Twin Turbo Diesel Hybrid Concept

BX5ECmw.jpg

BMWX5EC.jpg

We finally managed to discover BMW's mystery concept car for the Geneva Show: it's the Vision EfficientDynamics, or as we prefer to name it, the X5 2.0-liter Twin Turbo Diesel Hybrid Concept. The prototype model offers an insight into BMWs EfficientDynamics technologies that are set to find their way into production models in the near future. The X5 Concept combines BMWs all-new, twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine with a compact generator that, for the first time, is flange mounted directly onto a new eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 2.0-litre diesel engine delivers 204hp and 400Nm of torque between 2,000 and 2,250rpm while the mild hybrid concept generates a further 20hp and 210Nm of torque under acceleration.

According to BMW, while the Vision EfficientDynamics concept completes the sprint from zero to 62mph in just 8.9 sec it boasts an avg. fuel consumption of 36.5 MPG (US) or a mere, 6.5-liters per 100 km and just 172g/km of CO2 emissions.

Apart from the hybrid system, the prototype also features a Brake Energy Regeneration system which utilizes highly efficient lithium-ion batteries in the boot area to store the power generated which can be used to power the air conditioning, electric coolant pump and the electric power steering system.

Additionally, the prototype X5 is fitted with roof mounted photovoltaic solar panels, measuring 1.0 square meter. The energy generated can either be used immediately or stored for later use. Importantly, the power created in this zero- CO2 way can be used to pre-heat the diesel fuel. The less efficient warm-up phase is thus shortened considerably.

The chassis and ride-height of the X5 have also been adapted for the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics. This includes the aerodynamically-efficient but gargoyled 19-inch light alloy wheels with reduced ventilation.

Hoping to inject a dose of high class into the already sporty and respectable 5 Series, BMW plans to introduce three special-edition lineups of the sedan and wagon at Geneva. The Sport, Exclusive and Lifestyle editions are designed to appeal to the various portions of the 5 Series' widely varied customer base. Each is distinguished by unique paint colors and trim.

The Exclusive edition is set apart by its Platinum Bronze Metallic paint and additional chrome on the body. 17-inch alloy wheels and a wood-trimmed interior establish the Exclusive edition as the luxury car of the family. The Lifestyle edition is designed to appeal to more active 5 Series owners, with satin-finish chrome and a lighter interior featuring a leather and Reflex cloth interior. The Lifestyle's unique color is Neptune Blue. For the gearheads, the Sport edition gets BMW's signature racing colors--Imola Red or Le Mans Blue--as well as 18-inch M alloys, a body kit and an M sport suspension.

Naturally, the 5 Series' fantastic driving dynamics haven't been touched, and we've heard of no plans for exclusive powertrain changes to any of the special editions. The additions to the lineup will make it easier for 5 Series owners to tailor a car to specific desires straight from the factory.

Leaked: Mitsubishi Prototype-S concept

I like that hatch :D. As usual, it might not make it here :(

Mitsubishi's Prototype-S wasn't supposed to make its world debut until next month's Geneva Motor Show, but, thanks to an internet leak, we have our first glimpses at the Sportback. Although the Prototype S is currently listed as a concept, a production version is expected to be announced in the coming months.

Based on the Mitsubishi Concept Sportback first shown two years ago at the Frankfurt auto show, the production car will join the new Lancer Sedan and Lancer Evolution, but probably only at European dealerships. Mitsubishi hasn't officially announced that the production version of the Prototype-S will be for Euro consumption only, but one press release indicated that will likely be the case.

The Prototype-S is powered by the same 235 horsepower 2.0L turbo-four found in the Lancer Ralliart, first shown at the Detroit Auto Show. That power is sent to all four wheels via Mitsubishi's Twin Clutch SST transmission. The concept also uses Mitsubishi's Active Center Differential to split power between the front and rear wheels.

Check back for more details and live images after the concept's official unveiling.
