Can anyone describe what the interlock cable on the shift mechanism for the transmission is used for, I know its some sort of safety mechanism for the transmission,a tow truck driver broke mine now my car wont turn over ,does it stop engine from turning over ,the starter wont turn . ,thanks

It prevents the transmission from moving out of park without the brake pedal applied. Sounds like it may also not let the vehicle start without the brake pedal applied.

I believe it also tells the engine that the car is in park. The car won’t start unless it thinks it is in park (i.e. you cannot start the vehicle in drive or reverse for example). I think you might be able can start it in Neutral though, give that a try.
